Why does industrial design matter ?

Beyond Craftsmanship

Since 1996, Kok Chian has been designing products within industrial design studios. He has led a group of designers, working with engineering teams, scientists, ethnographers, researchers, CEOs, marketers & (occasional) chefs. These collaborations allowed him to transform the design process into a multi-disciplinary effort, without losing sight of the critical aims while designing products, experiences or infrastructures as a team.

Testimonials

“He is an inspiration. He makes Technical Studies easy for us to understand. His tutorials are inspirational and help to push our designs further. He takes responsibilities for students in all aspects of their life at university, both academically and for their wellbeing.”

“On behalf of the entire group, we wanted to thank you on your efforts and patience for giving us the opportunity to learn and grow by bringing in the (confidential) team. We all know the difficulties that the pandemic has brought to the dynamic of the project, yet this has been a favourite among many of us. So, Thank You ! Here are two pictures from the last meeting we had in our group.”

— Footwear Designer & Undergraduate Class of 2021

“Your help has been very inspiring and it’s fantastic to feel supported by my lecturer even a few years after graduation! I am thrilled that I have been offered a job opportunity as a Digital Designer. Thanks to the completion of my MSc and BA programme. None of this would have been possible without your help! Your dedication to your students has made a significant impact on my life. I am genuinely grateful for your support, which has opened up incredible opportunites for my future.”

— Glasgow Caledonian University MSc Graduate, 2023

“In my career at P&G and Pepsico, I have had the privilege of partnering with many of the world’s leading innovation agencies. Yet, I have never been more impressed with a team than I have been with Seymourpowell. Top to bottom, there is not a weak link in this agency – Leadership, client relationship management, consumer understanding, design thinking, technical expertise, model making and beyond. And the benefits gained from their partnership go well beyond delivery of the brief.

— PepsiCo Global Innovation Director, 2012

“Kok Chian has been working with me at GE/Fitch where I hold the position of President for all of Asia.

He started in our industrial design team as an industrial designer and soon proved himself in the organisation. Over the years, he has worked himself up through the organisation to the level of senior designer. In this role, he has managed programs independently including team leadership of our collaborative work process and client communication. He has completed successful products in the areas of computers, hand-phones, printers, air conditioners and television industrial design.

Kok Chian is somebody who has an exceptional level of energy. Any job he takes on, he will execute with total commitment and passion to do the best job. On top of his excellent creative abilities, he has exceptional CAD skills and has proven to be very knowledgeable and fast with the Pro/Engineer parametric tools.

He has a strong-minded character that has definite ideas on what is the right way forward.

I strongly believe that Kok Chian is a person that would benefit from additional foreign education and specifically a master degree at the RCA in London UK. This is one of the top Industrial Design courses in the world and it will provide him with the additional tools and experiences that will make him a more valuable player for any employer in any country in the world. Also, being Singaporean and with a Singapore education, it is good to be exposed to other cultures and environments to expand his creative horizons. I fully support his endeavours in obtaining a foreign degree.”

— GE/Fitch President, Asia Region, 2004
